Social inclusion

BHP Billiton

Ensuring access to education and training, healthcare, quality jobs and business opportunities supports social inclusion and provides the opportunity for people to realise their full potential.

Our approach

We focus on creating safe and inclusive environments for our local communities and for our people by respecting people’s rights, encouraging diversity of thought and creating opportunities. For example:

  • Our Code of Business Conduct describes our commitment to working with integrity and respect and provides guidance for everyone who works for, or on behalf of, BHP Billiton.

  • We support fundamental human rights consistent with the articles set out in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UN Global Compact principles.

  • We respect the rights of Indigenous Peoples and acknowledge their right to maintain their culture, identity, traditions and customs.

  • We believe that developing the capability and diversity of our people and building an inclusive work environment is fundamental to our success.

  • We have developed a management Strategy for the mental health and wellbeing of our workforce which is focused around Culture, Capacity, Prevention and Recovery.

Our social investment

Our operations support projects to build livelihoods and improve social inclusion in our local communities, for example:

  • In Western Australia we have worked with FORM to offer cultural and economic opportunities for communities in the Pilbara, which has led to new approaches to income generation and engagement for local Indigenous people.

  • We invest in programs focused on delivering social change through education. The programs aim to create a pathway to meaningful employment and improved quality of life by spanning the full spectrum of learning from early childhood development to tertiary studies

The BHP Billiton Foundation – Education Equity program

The BHP Billiton Foundation partners with NGOs and Institutions to enable equality of opportunity so more people can realise the power of education to improve life choices, fulfil their potential and contribute to society. The Foundation’s innovative partnerships across Australia improve educational opportunities and outcomes in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) for under-represented groups.

BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities

Based in the UK, BHP Billiton Sustainable Communities has a long history of investing in projects to promote social inclusion. They include:

  • The ANDA program in Colombia, which is focused on increasing access to basic services including education, healthcare, water, sanitation and housing as well as economic opportunities.

  • Investments in community health projects which aim to improve the quality of, and access to, general medical care. These initiatives range from a project to help maternal and child health in South Africa and Mozambique, to the refurbishment of a hospital emergency department in regional Australia.

  • The LEAD Project in Mozambique is an agricultural initiative for smallholder farmers that works to increase their income and business opportunities, improve production capacity and facilitate access to financing.
