We are successful when communities value their relationships with us. We work alongside our host communities to help them achieve sustainable economic and social benefits as well as diversified and resilient local economies, so that these benefits continue beyond the life of our operations.
Our broader contribution
We generate economic value for nations, regions and communities through employment, payment of taxes and royalties, purchasing local goods and services and infrastructure development. In the 2016 financial year our total economic contribution amounted to US$26.7 billion. All of our operated assets have local procurement plans and 31 per cent of our Company’s spend in the 2016 financial year was with local suppliers.
In addition to our economic contribution, we believe we have a responsibility to make a broader contribution to sustainable development. We make voluntary social investments in the communities in which we operate and fund the BHP Billiton Foundation, a charity which invests in national and global projects. Our investments are aligned with a number of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, including the provision of quality education, reducing inequality, climate action and enhanced institutional governance of natural resources.
