BHP Billiton today announced the appointment of Eleazar de Carvalho Filho as Chairman of BHP Billiton Brazil. The appointment reinforces the company’s ongoing commitment to Brazil and reflects the country’s attractiveness as an area for potential future investment.

Mr Carvalho will focus on growing BHP Billiton’s presence in Brazil, where the company already has a number of major investments, which include a 50% interest in the Samarco iron ore operation and a 36% interest in the Alumar alumina refinery, a 46% interest in the Alumar aluminium smelter and a 46% interest in the Valesul aluminium smelter. The company also has an active exploration programme. In addition, he will also support BHP Billiton’s wider business objectives throughout South America.

Mr Carvalho will take up the position, to be based in Rio de Janeiro, on 1 June 2006, and will report to Bob Kirkby – Executive President of BHP Billiton. Mr Carvalho is a Partner at Iposeira Gestão de Ativos, a Board member of Santista Têxtil and an Advisory Board member of ABN AMRO Brasil Participacoes Financeiras. He was also formally the President and Director of BNDES, one of the world’s largest development banks.

Commenting on the appointment Mr Bob Kirkby, Executive President of BHP Billiton, said he was delighted to welcome Mr Carvalho as the new Chairman of BHP Billiton Brazil. “Brazil and the wider South American region are key areas in terms of BHP Billiton’s global business strategy and Eleazar’s appointment will significantly strengthen our presence and profile in this important region.”

Speaking about his new role, Mr Carvalho said: “I’m excited about joining such a significant global company in the resources industry and look forward to leading BHP Billiton’s growth opportunities in Brazil."

Born in São Paulo, Mr Carvalho holds a Masters of Arts in International Relations from The Johns Hopkins University in Washington D.C. and a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics from New York University.
