Manganese Alloy producer Tasmanian Electro Metalurgical Company (TEMCO) was last week recognised for its outstanding safety performance, winning the Tasmanian Minerals Council Silver Award for Safety.

The award was presented at the 2001 Health and Safety Seminar on Thursday 6 September by Tasmanian Deputy Premier Paul Lennon.

TEMCO General Manager Les Jensen congratulated all employees for their ongoing contribution to safety.

"I am extremely proud of everyone's commitment to a safe workplace. This is the second year running we have received an award and I look forward to doing even better next year," he said.

Workplace Standards Tasmania representatives judged the awards, with criteria based on improvement, initiative shown, and the manner in which safety is managed.

Northern Tasmanian companies scooped the pool on the night, with the Innovation Award being won by Beaconsfield Gold and the Gold Safety Award (which TEMCO won last year) being awarded to Comalco.

TEMCO is 60 per cent owned by BHP Billiton.
