Stainless Steel Materials

A global producer and supplier of nickel.

  • About Stainless Steel Materials

Stainless Steel Materials is the world’s fourth largest nickel producer and a global supplier of nickel to the stainless steel industry.

We deliver the following products to our global clients:

    • High purity nickel briquettes, powders, and ferronickel granules
    • Nickel intermediates in the form of matte and concentrate
    • A range of saleable co-products

In addition, we supply nickel to other markets, including the specialty alloy, foundry, chemicals and refractory material industries. We have two producing assets located in Australia and Colombia, and employ over 5,000 employees and contractors.

We aim to extend the life of our current assets while continuing to explore new opportunities. We do this by applying innovative exploration techniques to enhance output from existing and potential assets, while working within other areas of our global footprint to develop new growth possibilities.

Nickel is used in hundreds of alloys and thousands of end use applications world-wide.  Nickel is an essential element in many everyday products including mobile phones, computers, rechargeable batteries, CDs, computers, common kitchen utensils and food processing equipment.

Austenitic stainless steel, or nickel-containing stainless steel, promotes a more stable and ductile structure that contributes to corrosion resistance. This product is instrumental to many industries including architecture, transport, aerospace, medical and heavy industries as well as chemical processing and energy applications.

  • Assets

    Cerro Matoso, Colombia

Cerro Matoso is the world's second largest producer of ferronickel and one of the lowest cost producers. Located near the town of Montelíbano in northern Colombia, the asset combines a lateritic nickel ore deposit with a low cost ferronickel smelter. The smelter produces high-purity, low-carbon ferronickel granules. Cerro Matoso has begun studies on options to expand production, including a heap leaching operation.

    Nickel West, Australia

Nickel West is a fully integrated mine to market business comprising mines, concentrators, a smelter and refinery. All our operations are in Western Australia and include:

    • Nickel West Mt Keith - a large, open-cut nickel mine and concentrator.
    • Nickel West Leinster - two underground nickel mines and concentrator.
    • Nickel West Kalgoorlie - a nickel concentrator and smelter which produces nickel concentrate and nickel matte.
    • Nickel West Kwinana - produces nickel metal in the form of London Metal Exchange grade nickel briquettes and nickel powder as well as a range of saleable co-products.
