GRI Report - GRI Checked

Our 2009 sustainability reporting has been prepared in accordance with Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Guidelines and the International Council on Mining and Metals Sustainable Development Framework requirements. The Report has been assessed by GRI as meeting the requirements for the A+ GRI Application Level (PDF, 2.3MB) and 3rd Party Checked standard. We believe it represents a balanced and reasonable presentation of our organisation's economic, environmental and social performance.

2009 GRI 3rd Party

This GRI Index demonstrates how our report addresses the GRI Standard Disclosure requirements.

The third column of the Index indicates the relevant sections of our reporting that address the Standard Disclosure requirements. Not all references to an indicator are included in this Index, as it is impractical to list every applicable reference to an indicator.

The symbol in the fourth column of this Index provides an indication of the level of coverage of each GRI indicator in the report.

2009 Conformance Status This symbol indicates that the GRI performance indicator has been met

2009 Part Conformance Status This symbol indicates that the GRI performance indicator has been partially met

2009 Not Reported Status This symbol indicates that the GRI performance indicator is not reported

In compiling this Index we have taken into consideration a number of issues associated with the compilation and production of our 2009 Sustainability Report. Issues considered include the complexity of the Company and the materiality of the indicators in relation to its operations, and the general intent and purpose of the Global Reporting Initiative.

Please refer to the Net Balance Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3 Assessment for BHP Billiton (PDF, 282KB) for information on the relevant GRI Indicators.
