BHP Billiton delivers uranium oxide concentrate to utility customers exclusively for the generation of electricity in civil nuclear reactors. We have long term contracts for the sale of uranium oxide concentrates to customers in the United Kingdom, France, Sweden, Finland, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Canada, the United States and Spain.
BHP Billiton has 100 per cent ownership of Olympic Dam, the world's largest uranium deposit, which produced 4,007 tonnes of uranium oxide concentrate in 2007. BHP Billiton is currently undertaking a two year pre-feasibility study into the expansion of Olympic Dam.
The extensive resources at Olympic Dam allow BHP Billiton to offer (ultra) long term agreements for the supply of uranium oxide concentrates. The fact that our resource has the potential to exceed the typical lifetime of a reactor (~60+ yrs), the politically stable location of the project and BHP Billiton's commitment to servicing utilities worldwide provide our customers with the highest degree of security of supply.
