Selection Criteria
All requests are assessed against the following criteria. Your request must meet these criteria.
Donation Requests
- Demonstrate deliverable outcomes in the community, within the identified priority focus area
- Develops capacity within our communities of interest:
- Port Hedland
- South Hedland
- Newman
- Perth
- Remote indigenous communities of: Jigalong, Punmu, Parnngurr (Cotton Creek), Parnpajinya (outskirts of Newman), Youngaleena (near Auski/Munjina Roadhouse), Irrungadji (within Nullagine township), Yandeyarra, Strelley, Warralong, Woodstock (near Redmont), Goodabinya (outskirts of Marble Bar), Jinparinya (30km East Hedland on Yarrie Rail line) and Punju Njamal (Neighbour to Jinparinya).
Sponsorship and Partnership requests
- Address a community need that is not readily met by existing government programs / bodies
- Demonstrate deliverable outcomes in the community, within our identified priority focus areas
- Contribute measurable, long term solutions to relevant community issues
- Encourage further state or local government support, shared responsibility and integration into long term community development strategies
- Develops capacity within our communities of interest
- Demonstrates appropriate governance and capacity to manage the project
- Be sustainable beyond the life of our support
Who is Eligible to Apply?
We accept requests from:
- Incorporated, not for profit organisations / institutions that are based in and /or deliver services in our communities of interest
- Not for profit educational institutions (e.g. universities, schools, TAFE colleges)
- Local government bodies
You should have a proven track record of managing community projects or, be able to demonstrate that you will be able to manage the project for which support is being sought.
Not for profit bodies that are not incorporated can apply under the banner of an incorporated organisation that agrees to administer the funds on their behalf (auspicing body).
Things We Support
We support projects initiated by the community that aim to develop our communities of interest and provide long term results. We provide financial support for discrete, one off projects that have measurable community benefits within our areas of focus such as, Indigenous capacity building programs, education pipeline programs, health services and projects aimed at encouraging greater community involvement.
Things We Cannot Support
As we have only a limited amount of funds each year, there are some things that we can not support. These include:
- Requests from individuals - including those seeking support for:
- Academic studies towards a degree
- Overseas travel for any purpose
- Raising funds on behalf of charitable or other organisations
- Requests from political or sectarian organisations or campaigns
- Requests from religious organisations for religious purposes
- Requests from conference organisers or potential attendees at conferences or symposia
- Commercial or advertising requests
- Individual or BHP Billiton WA Iron Ore branded teams
- Activities that are hazardous or dangerous
- Activities that conflict with our corporate values
- Overseas travel requests
- Requests for recurrent funding
We value health and safety and as such, expect all successful applicants to comply with Occupational Health and Safety standards and legislative requirements for all projects supported by us. For assistance with these requirements, please contact our Community Relations Advisors.
How Much Can You Ask For?
We do not have any set limits on how much you can ask for. All requests will be judged on their merit.
Your Project Budget
For sponsorship and partnership requests, we require you to submit a detailed project budget as part of your application. Please use the format as supplied in the application form.
GST
If your organisation is registered for the Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST), the amount you seek from us should be exclusive of GST. We will pay the relevant GST on top of the amount you request. For example, if you require $2000 for your project, please request $2000 (ex GST) and we will pay you $2000 plus $200 GST. Before we pay you any monies, we will request a tax invoice from you. If you are not registered for GST, then we will pay you only the amount you request.
How to Make a Request
Your request must be submitted to us on the relevant application form before 5pm on the closing dates as detailed below:
- 1st Feb
- 1st May
- 1st Aug
- 1st Nov
Note: where the closing date falls on a weekend, you should submit your request by 5pm on the next business day.
Your application must be signed by your CEO or Chairperson. If your application is being auspiced by another organisation, their CEO / Chairperson must also sign your application.
Submitting Your Request
Support Materials
You may wish to send materials (e.g., photographs, annual reports) in support of your request however, we regret that neither your application or support materials can be returned to you. If you wish to send support materials, please supply copies and not the originals.

What Happens Now?
Once received, your request will be checked by our Community Relations Advisors who may seek additional information from you. It will then be forwarded for assessment by our assessment committees who will recommend which applications are to be supported. BHP We offer no assurances that your request will be supported.
You will receive notification of the outcome of your request within approximately two months of applying. If you are successful, we will ask you to sign an agreement detailing the terms and conditions of our support. At the end of the project, you will be required to submit an evaluation report.
