Apprenticeships

Each year, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, in conjunction with Apprenticeships Western Australia offers apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities in Port Hedland and Newman.

BHP Billiton Iron Ore currently hosts Apprentices and Trainees in the following areas:

  • Apprentices – mechanical and electrical disciplines;
  • Indigenous Trainees – metaliferous mining, civil construction, production, transport and distribution; and
  • Administration Trainees – business administration.

The program provides a mix of on-site work placements, training and TAFE studies. Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship or traineeship, you may be offered the chance to undertake further studies, or even a permanent position with BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

The Recruitment Process

Recruitment usually begins in September each year, with employment commencing in February the following year.  Positions are advertised in the Northwest Telegraph as well as through local schools, TAFEs and employment centres.

Due to the limited number of opportunities available, applicants are recruited from Port Hedland, Newman and surrounding areas.

Apprenticeships Western Australia and BHP Billiton Iron Ore are equal opportunity employers and strongly encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to apply.

Application forms and additional information can be obtained from an Apprenticeships Western Australia office or by telephoning (61 8) 9172 1899.
