Health, Safety & Environment

There is a firm commitment within Worsley and the expansion project to Zero Harm – to our people, the environment and the community. To achieve this, comprehensive and robust management systems are in place.
Contractors applying for work on the expansion undergo prequalification checks and preference is given to those with above average safety records. The competencies of contractor employees are verified to ensure they have the qualifications and training needed to complete tasks safely.
Zero Incident Process, a unique psychological program that identifies unsafe thinking, is being implemented along with a People-Based Safety Program, which involves peers monitoring and providing feedback on at-risk behaviours. BHP Billiton’s Fatal Risk Standards and Fit for Work, Fit for Life Program have also been adopted.
The Expansion Project has been through one of the State Environmental Protection Authority’s highest levels of assessment.
The WA Government gave formal approval in 2006 and in doing so required the development and implement of management plans to address various aspects of the expansion and Worsley’s ongoing operations. The following plans have been prepared: Air Quality Management Plan; Greenhouse Gas Emission Management Plan; Biodiversity Investigations.
